Business Case funding approved for cycleway

The long awaited Feilding to Palmerston North cycle and walkway has taken another step to becoming a reality.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has approved a joint application for funding to carry out a detailed business case for a cycling and walkway that could link Feilding to Palmerston North.

Both Manawatū District Council and Palmerston North City Council included the project in their respective Long Term Plans for 2018-21.

Manawatu District Council Roading Manager John Jones says that connecting and improving active linkages between Palmerston North and Feilding has, in various forms been under investigation since 2005.

“There has been a number of public submissions made on this particular topic over the years, so it is encouraging to see this initial funding approved,” he says.

If a robust case for investment can be made in the detailed business case then subsequent applications can be made to the New Zealand Transport Agency for the design and construction phases.

The proposed cycleway and walkway will link Feilding and Palmerston North via Bunnythorpe.
