As of the 1st of July our Urban and Rural firefighters have merged to become Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). The new name recognises the responsibilities they have for more than just firefighting.
They also attend medical emergencies, flooding and other important weather events, as well as motor vehicle accidents, chemical spills and rescues.
There may not be much obvious change seen in the Manawatu because the Rural and Urban brigades work closely already, but the merger will increase our resources.
The most significant change will be that Manawatu District Council will no longer be issuing Rural Fire Permits. These can be obtained directly from FENZ using their ‘Check its Alright to Light’ website www.checkitsalright.nz.
The number will still stay the same though- if you have a fire or see anything suspicious, CALL 111.
