Seal Extension—Main South Road Update

Sealing of Main South Road: Council plans to seal the remaining unsealed section of Main South Road, over three years. The work began in 2011/12 and is scheduled for completion in 2013/14.  Council made the decision to seal this portion of the road in light of the economic potential of the northern part of the district.  Main South Road is an integral part of the Country Road project.  This project envisages a tourist and cycling route through northern Manawatu, taking in many of its attractions and beautiful scenery.

  • Unsealed length 8.6km.
  • Phased over 2-3 years
  • Annual plan budget 2.1 million

Current Progress to Date

Work commenced at the northern most section of the site

All scheduled earthworks and drainage is complete

The first 2km of pavement construction and sealing is complete, another 500m of pavement construction and sealing to be completed by the end of May

Maintenance metal has been applied to the remaining 1.2km of unsealed road – this work is to be completed in the spring

Design work is under way for realignment of Bowling Rd intersection. repairs to the culvert at this intersection will also take place at the same time as the upgrade

Sign upgrades are planned for installation over the winter period
