The Manawatu District Council is an active member of the Manawatu-Wanganui Civil Defence Emergency Management group as required by the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002.
The Group is a consortium of the local authorities in the region with the vision “to build a resilient and safer region with communities understanding and managing their hazards and risks”.
This group maintains a Group Plan that considers all phases of emergency: reduction, readiness, response and recovery.
A Business Plan is also managed by the group, with each member of the Council’s contributing to achieving the goals of the group. The group has adopted a philosophy of centralised co-ordination and local delivery and works closely with emergency services, welfare agencies and other strategic partners for effective and comprehensive emergency management.
The Manawatu District Council has contracted the services of Horizons Regional Council for the provision of emergency management services.
These services include Civil Defence and Rural Fire.
Civil Defence helps communities understand and manage their hazards and risks.

Fire and Emergency NZ provides protection of people, property and the environment, public health and safety and peace of mind for residents.
