Himatangi Beach Concept Development Plan

The Himatangi Beach Concept Development Plan follows on from the 2007 Coastal Reserves Management Plan. The plan resolved to develop the reserve area between the camping ground and surf club and along Kaikokopu Stream at Himatangi Beach on the Manawatu coast. The development plan sets up design principles and provides a planting concept for the reserve.

The objective of the development plan is to provide for: recreation for toddlers, children and young people, improving the overall water quality and fish habitat of Kaikokopu Stream, protection of whitebait spawning areas, provision of public toilets and to develop walkways linking with a wider township walking network and to provide planting and interpretation showcasing dune species typical of Manawatu coastal dunes.

A key component in the resolution of the development plan was the involvement of residents, holiday home owners, the community committee and other interested groups and individuals in two community workshops held at the Himatangi Beach H.comall. Contributors in the first workshop worked together to create concept plans for the site. The second workshop reviewed and finalised the developed concept plans.

The plan proposes forming two community groups - a stream care group and a dune planting group to support Manawatu District Council in the development of planting areas along the stream and dunes in the reserve. If you are interested in being a part of one of these groups, please contact Albert James, Reserves Manager on 06 323 0000.
