What is RSS?

Manawatu District Council will publish a number of RSS feeds, available in the RSS 2.0 format.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. RSS is an XML-based format which allows web publishers to create and disseminate feeds of data, based on the content of their website.

RSS feeds contain article headlines, links and descriptions. The feeds are updated as the website is updated.

Readers can view the content of the RSS feeds using specialist news readers which allow people to view feeds from multiple sources. Or if you are clever enough you can incorporate the feed into your website.

When content is published, it will be delivered to your RSS reader and be available for you to view whenever you want.

RSS feeds contain a headline, summary and a link back to the full story on www.mdc.govt.nz (or another website / blog if you are also receiving feeds from other sources).

To view RSS headlines:

To subscribe to an RSS feed you need to have an RSS newsreader.

There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.

All allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds you want.

If you would like to look at other choices or have an operating system other than Windows, Google directory has a comprehensive list.

Web sites indicate the availability of an RSS feed by placing the following icon RSS on their pages.  There are two ways to subscribe to a feed using this icon.

By clicking on the icon, you will be taken to the RSS feed page.  You can then copy the URL to your newsreader.
Alternatively, if you have downloaded and installed an RSS newsreader application, you can drag and drop the RSS icon into your newsreader.
