SERVICES

Cemeteries

We provide cemeteries to ensure that there are high standard facilities for the burial of deceased persons in accordance with the Burial and Cremation Act 1964 to:
  • Maintain cemeteries as reserves when they have reached capacity.
  • Develop cemeteries as important places of "remembrance" and historical sites in the district.
  • Meet social and cultural requirements for the provision of cemeteries in the community.
How we provide this service

Feilding Cemetery - a total area of 6.12 hectares (Lethbridge Road). Also under the Manawatu District Council’s jurisdiction are Rongotea, Sandon (Sanson), Halcombe, Kimbolton, Rangiwahia, Waituna West and Pohangina cemeteries.

Services provided (Feilding)

  • Standard lawn, Cremation lawn, Children's lawn, Returned Servicemen's lawn - with pre-placed beams for headstones.
  • Hebe garden for cremation ashes.
  • Sealed access road, public toilets, seats, tap water for flowers, refuse bins, shade trees and native bush.
Maintenance standards

The following are examples of items that the Council requires via its cemetery maintenance contract (Independent Cemetery Boards undertake the administration and maintenance of Bunnythorpe and Apiti):
  • Inspection for vandalism, graffiti, storm damage, safety and security.
  • Graves are kept free of weeds and grass, with grounds kept debris and litter free. (The Council does not maintain the graves and headstones themselves).
  • Grass is mown with a catcher in specified areas of high presentation, otherwise kept to a height not to exceed 50mm.
  • Trees, gardens, planted areas and cemetery furniture is maintained to provide a pleasant appearance.
  • Cultural and religious requirements are respected e.g. restoration of graves is not undertaken until all mourners have left the site.
  • The Council's Customer Services Team maintains an accurate record of all interments.
Cost

The public/private benefit split for cemeteries is 60:40. A district-wide Uniform Annual Charge (meaning everyone in the district pays the same amount towards cemetery costs) is used to meet the public portion. Some examples of fees and charges are:
  • Adult interment - $800
  • Adult plot purchase - $600
  • Ashes interment - $125
  • Ashes plot purchase - $275
Council has a policy in relation to reserving plots at any of our administered cemeteries.

Please note the cost to reserve a plot is 200% of the current plot purchase price.
