Dog registration payments missing

AN incoming mail bag stolen from Manawatu District Council premises on Tuesday, June 30, is believed to have contained about 40 return envelopes. Council officials feel these were likely to include completed dog registration forms from customers.

In recognition of the delay that will now be incurred by customers whose dog registrations may have been stolen, an extra 10 days has been added to the deadline to avoid late payment penalties. If you have sent mail to the council on or about June 29, please ensure that we have receipted it. You can do this by contacting the council’s Customer Services Centre on (06) 323-0000 and provide relevant details.

If you have any other concerns or questions regarding this, please contact our Customer Services staff. And if you have any information regarding the theft, or the large, yellow courier bag, please contact Feilding police on (06) 323-6363.

Waste disposal fee changes

SOME fees at Manawatu District refuse transfer stations are to increase from Wednesday, July 1, due to requirements of the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 that now imposes a levy of $10 per tonne on waste disposed at such facilities.

Wastes Manager, Peterson Asante, said the purpose of the levy was to raise revenue for promoting and achieving waste minimisation and to highlight the cost waste disposal had on the environment, society and economy. Refuse transfer stations in the district are located at Feilding, Kimbolton, Bunnythorpe and Rongotea.

The new fees are: Small load - car boot size, $26 (from $25), medium load - up to 350kg payload, $46 ($40), large load - 350 to 500kg payload, $70 ($60) and trucks and loads over 500kg payload, $117/ton ($107).

Mr Asante said the act also provided guidance on how levy monies could be spent and distributed. “Manawatu intends to use its share of the monies on continuing waste minimisation programmes in schools, improving greenwaste services in the district and refining the current recycling process,” he said. “There may also be opportunities to look at other improved waste minimisation options as technology advances.”

The amended fees are advertised in the council’s annual rates booklet and signage advertising the changes will shortly be on display at the transfer stations.
