Apply To Be A Youth Councillor

Become a youth voice in our community, participate in running awesome events, learn new skills and engage in topics facing both local and central government!

If you are between 13 and 24 years of age, apply to be a Youth Councillor by answering the below questions. This will enable us to make an informed decision around who would be most suitable around our Youth Council table for 2024 and beyond. Diversity and Inclusion is really important to us as we work towards modern expectations and we are hoping for a wide range of applications.

Please be aware that this is a time commitment. We meet twice a month from February to December (including during school holidays) and additional meetings may be scheduled as required. Meetings will take place on the first and third Monday of each month at the council chambers from 5:30pm. A minimum level of participation is outlined in the Terms of Reference, and members are expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct and Role Description expectations. We also expect our members to sit on sub committees, be involved with community initiatives, and assist in the organising of events such as the Young Achievers Awards, the Colour Run and the Youth Market.

Once elected, members will have the right to remain on the Council for a term of two (2) years, however should members head out of the district, for university or another commitment, then a one year term is acceptable. Members are able to stand for a maximum of 4 years.

The Manawatū District Council makes a commitment to support Youth Council members with a pizza supper for their meetings, annual training, coaching and learning about how local government ticks. It provides a safe environment for youth to have a voice on policies and bylaws, and encourages members to become involved in council initiatives and attend Council/Committee meetings.
