Kowhai Park Aviaries are now closed

Council officers have worked with the Avicultural Society who kindly offered to uplift and rehome the birds. The aviaries will be demolished and replaced with display gardens in due course.

As part of Manawatū District Council’s Long-term Plan 2024-2034, the aviaries at Kōwhai Park were consulted by way of two options; option A: close existing aviaries and replace with display garden, or option B: build new aviaries in Kowhai Park to replace the old aviaries.

127 submissions were received in favour of closing the existing aviaries to 60 submissions in favour building new aviaries in Kowhai Park to replace the old aviaries.

The aviaries closed on Monday 16 September 2024.

Council officers have worked with the Avicultural Society who kindly offered to uplift and rehome the birds.  A list of interested homes collected by Council officers has been passed on to the society who will manage the rehoming.

The aviaries were built in 1964 and since their construction the Animal Welfare standards and public expectation have changed.  The present condition of the aviaries did not meet current animal welfare standards, minimal industrial practices, or community expectations.

The aviaries will be demolished and replaced with display gardens in due course.
