Complaints about food or food businesses play a vital role in ensuring food safety by helping to identify potential issues and enabling timely investigations to protect public health.
Complaints about food poisoning
If you are feeling unwell and suspect that you have food poisoning from consuming contaminated food or drink from a food outlet, please report it to the Public Health Unit at MidCentral Health on (06) 350 9110.
Complaints about food safety and hygiene
If you have concerns or a complaint about a food business, contact Council at (06) 323 0000 for issues related to:
- cleanliness
- food display or storage
- food hygiene practices
- foreign object found in food
- food safety issues
- food labelling
- unregistered food business.
Some food businesses are registered with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Complaints regarding these businesses will be forwarded to the MPI compliance team or you can lodge a complaint directly with MPI. Check the public register to determine whether a food business is registered with us or MPI.
