Bin There, Asked That
We know food scraps might not be everyone’s passion - so let’s work together to get you on board with using the service. Below we have answered some frequently asked questions to help guide you your concerns.
Do I have to pay for a bin or the service if I don’t use it?
Great news - there's no cost to residents for their food scraps bin! The bins were funded through the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Levy, so there’s currently no charge to your rates for this service. It’s basically free and reduces the amount of rubbish you need to dispose of in your Council blue bag.
I don’t want/need a bin, I already compost
It’s great to hear that you’re already composting - well done! If your system is working for you, we encourage you to keep it up. That said, the food scraps service can still be a helpful addition, as it accepts items that don’t usually go in home compost bins, like meat, bones, citrus, and onions.
I will not use my bin, I would like to return it
We recommend holding on to your bin - you might find the service useful in the future. However, if you’re sure you’d like to return it, please get in touch with us at (06) 323 0000.
