From Fire Calls to Finish Line

For 22 years, Cheryl Hirschberg has answered the call as a volunteer firefighter, stepping into emergencies with courage and calm. But earlier this year, she faced a very different kind of challenge — the gruelling IRONMAN Worlds 70.3, an elite endurance race that tests even the most seasoned athletes.

This was her fourth time competing at the World Championship level, but the first time the competition was hosted here in New Zealand.

Cheryl trains two to three times a week at the Makino Aquatic Centre, helping to perfect the 1.9km open swim which is partnered with a 90km bike ride and 21.1km run as part of the race.

Crossing the finish line 24th out of 166 competitors in her age group placed her in the top 18% of athletes in her age category — a testament to her quiet determination and relentless drive.

“The run crowd was so well supported,” she said.  “We could all feel the energy from the home crowd egging us on to the finish”.

MDC helped to support Cheryl, through the Representative Grant Fund.  The fund supports individuals or teams selected or qualified to represent the Manawatū District or New Zealand at national or international events.

“Cheryl represents the spirit of everyday athletes who balance intense training with full lives and meaningful service”, Helen King, Community Services Coordinator explains. “Her journey to the starting line wasn’t about being the fastest or the flashiest — it was about showing up, over and over again, for both her community and herself.”

Cheryl is an inspirational resident who demonstrates resilience, community, and proving what’s possible when passion meets purpose.

As she reflects on her latest race, she's already thinking about what comes next — both in the field and on the course.  Congratulations Cheryl!
