Consultation Open for Speed Management Proposal
Have your say on the Speed Management Proposal. The proposal introduces a temporary speed limit that operates at certain times of the day in school zones and proposes changes to permanent speed limits in various locations in the Manawatū District. It’s part of central government requirements to help keep our roads safe.
Open until Sunday 25 January 2026, it’s your time to tell Council your thoughts, suggestions, concerns, ideas, or support for the proposed changes.
Central Government has updated the rules for how speed limits must be set and requires councils to install variable speed limits (VSL) outside of schools by 30 June 2026, under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits (2024). Many schools within the District already have VSL signs, which show a temporary speed limit that operates during school pick up and drop off times.
Alongside VSL changes, permanent speed limits are being reviewed to reflect changes in road use from residential and commercial development. Adjusting the permanent speed limits maintains roads as safe and fit for purpose for current and future needs, improving safety outside schools and preventing serious injuries and fatalities.
The consultation period (open until Sunday 25 January 2026) provides a valuable opportunity for the District to collaborate, share ideas, and consider ways to improve safety around schools and areas of high public use.
The Speed Management Proposal explains the mandated school VSL changes and the proposed permanent speed limit updates, with accompanying maps and detailed descriptions.
