Farm Plastic Recycling Drop-Off Event

Bring your used bale wrap and silage pit covers to be recycled into new agricultural products. This free event helps keep farm plastics out of burn piles, landfills, and the environment - and puts them back into circulation for use in the farming sector.

Manawatū District Council are partnering with Plasback to bring you this event.

Plasback operates a Product Stewardship scheme to recover used farm plastics for recycling. Their bin and liner system, combined with on farm collection means they have collected over 45,000 tonnes of waste since they came to NZ in 2006.


What we are collecting

We will accept only the following items:

✅ Bale wrap
✅ Silage pit covers

⚠️ Please note: This event is not for containers, drums, or small bags. These items can be recycled for free year-round through AgRecovery, with three drop-off points in Feilding. Please visit the AgRecovery website for more information.


How the event works

This is a two-day drop-off event with online registration and allocated time slots.

  1. Register for the event and book a drop-off time using the form below
  2. Collect Plasback liners from the Manawatū District Council office in Feilding (pick up days to be communicated after registration).
    • Limit of 5 Council supplied Plasback liners per person - please only take what you need
  3. Prepare your plastic so it meets recycling and health & safety requirements (see below)
  4. Drop off your prepared plastic at the event location during your booked time
    • Staff and machinery will be onsite to assist with unloading if needed

The drop-off location will be emailed to registered attendees prior to the event.


Plastic preparation requirements

To ensure plastics can be recycled safely, all material must meet the following requirements. Non-compliant plastic cannot be accepted.

Bale wrap

  • ✅ Free from effluent or other contamination
  • ✅ Placed inside the supplied Plasback liners only, and tied off with the supplied cable ties
  • ❌ No netting mixed with the wrap
  • ❌ Not brittle or sun-damaged

Silage pit covers

  • ✅ Free from effluent or other contamination
  • ✅ Cut if required
  • ✅ Folded neatly
  • ✅ Tied securely with baling twine
  • ❌ Not brittle or sun-damaged

Please prepare all plastic before arriving at the event. No plastics in wool fadges or fert bags.
