Halcombe’s Community Committee Hard at Work Enhancing Signage
Halcombe’s welcome signs have been given a well-deserved refresh thanks to the Halcombe Community Group. Once faded, the signs are now bright and welcoming for vehicle traffic travelling along Halcombe Road. The Committee didn’t stop at the entrances; a new history board has been erected on the Halcombe walkway detailing the history of the district and township – dating back to 1894, adding to the existing history of rail board.
From fruition, these signs were sparked by community feedback to refresh the communities' vision and plan. Through Council funding, the Community Committee erected this signage and have plans to install further signage throughout the year.
Maureen Lambert from Halcombe’s Community Committee championed the creation of the new history board. As a former schoolteacher, Lambert’s passion for history and research was evident as she outlined the wealth of resources used - Council webpages, centennial booklets, archives and most significantly, people. “The people are the heart of Halcombe, families are rooted here for generations” Lambert commented, “the history is shaped by the people”. She noted that several stories came directly from community, including some from individuals who have since passed—emphasising the importance of preserving their story.
Local iwi are also on board sharing their ngā kōrero, and further history boards are in the pipeline, with the history of Halcombe Hall in production in now. Future boards include schools, churches, support groups and sports.
Many photos, comments and posts of the signs have been shared online and the word on the street is overwhelmingly positive! Lambert praised their small but mighty committee for their achievements.
These signs are a lasting contribution to Halcombe that will be valued by the community for years to come. Manawatū District Council is proud to support these initiatives, cherishing Halcombe’s community spirit and respect for its heritage.
