St Joseph’s Students Get Recycling Tips

The Manawatū District Council’s Waste Minimisation Team recently visited St Joseph’s School in Feilding to support the students’ studies on rubbish and recycling.

The interactive presentation covered what can and can’t go into Feilding’s kerbside recycling bins, as well as what happens to the materials once they reach Council’s recycling facility. Students learned the journey their recycling and rubbish take – from collection at the kerb to processing and repurposing – and the importance of keeping recycling streams clean and free from contamination.

One of the biggest takeaways for the students was a simple but crucial recycling rule: always remove lids before placing bottles, jugs, cans, and jars into the recycling bin. Lids go into the rubbish, as they are too small to be processed with other recyclables and can cause machinery issues.

For the Council team, the highlight of the day was the students’ curiosity and sense of humour. When asked how old Council staff were, the students cheerfully guessed 70 years old!

The Waste Minimisation Team left impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and armed with a fresh reminder that when it comes to recycling keep it clean, empty, and dry.
