Dog Adoption Programme
MDC’s adoption programme helps dogs in need find safe, secure, and permanent homes with people who are prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership.
Each dog is:
- assessed for temperament and behaviour
- Vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered (where appropriate)
- Matched carefully to suitable homes based on their needs
We’re looking for adopters who can offer a stable environment, regular care, and plenty of time and affection.
Register Your Interest in Adopting
If you're interested in offering a dog a second chance, we’d love to hear from you. Please complete our Dog Adoption Interest Form below to register your details with us.
Once you register:
- We’ll contact you if a dog becomes available that suits your circumstances
- An Animal Control Office will arrange a home visit
- If a suitable match is found, we'll guide you through the next steps, including finalising the adoption and processing the $250 adoption fee.
- As part of the adoption, all new owners receive a free bag of dog food courtesy of Black Hawk Pet Care.
Please note that not all dogs in our care will be available for rehoming, and placement is not guaranteed. Our priority is to ensure each dog is rehomed responsibly and safely.
Things to Consider Before Applying
Before registering your interest, please make sure:
- You are allowed to keep a dog at your property (particularly if you rent)
- You have adequate time to exercise and care for a dog daily
- You’re ready for a long-term commitment – many dogs live 10+ years
If you have questions about the adoption programme, please contact our Animal Control Officers by emailing dogs@mdc.govt.nz or calling 06 323 0000.
