2025 Local Election Progress Results

Manawatū District’s 2025 local elections have been marked by strong community engagement, with voters across the district helping to shape the new Council for the next term.

The progress election results can be found here.

The new Council will be officially sworn in at an inaugural meeting the evening of Tuesday 28 October 2025.

“Standing for local office requires commitment and a genuine desire to serve,” Shayne Harris, MDC Chief Executive explains.  “I want to thank all candidates and voters who took the opportunity to participate in the election.  My team and I look forward to working with Manawatū District’s new Council.”

In addition to the election of Council representatives, voters also took part in a binding referendum on whether to retain the Ngā Tapuae o Mātangi Māori Ward. The district voted not to retain the Māori ward beyond the current Council term.  The outcome will take effect for the 2028 and 2031 local elections.

Harris said the results reflect strong interest from the community in the poll.

“Although the community has decided not to keep Ngā Tapuae o Mātangi Māori Ward, Council remains committed to ensuring that Māori have a strong and meaningful voice in local decision-making”.
