Community Committees Accepting Triennial Appointments
As Council settles into the new triennium and Liaison Councillors for Community Committees have been confirmed, Community Committees are now busy appointing their members for the next triennial term.
Community Committees are groups of dedicated residents from townships across the Manawatū District, working in partnership with Council to build stronger, resilient and sustainable communities. Comprising of 7 to 10 members, there are currently 16 active Community Committees in the District, and their term coincides with the Council’s three-year cycle.
Council welcomes and encourages community members to attend their local triennial public meeting and consider what joining the committee could look like for them. Community Committees are the voice of their community, ensuring their views, opinions and recommendations are heard by Council. It’s all about empowering localism, sharing experience, expertise, passion, ideas and supporting them to come to fruition for the community.
At a public community meeting chaired by the Liaison Councillor, the community can nominate themselves to join the committee in a way that best suits their interests. This could be as a member or taking on a leadership role such as Chairperson, Secretary or Treasurer (if applicable).
Community Committees create a community plan for their township, an aspirational vision of the community into the future. The plan provides the big picture, setting the strategic direction for Council priorities, growing community spirit, cherishing heritage and unique characteristics, and supporting Council to implement projects the community wants. Supported by Liaison Councillors, the committees can also submit to Council’s annual plan and long-term plan, ensuring community voice is heard and considered.
