Feilding’s Food Scraps Bin Rolls Out with Style This November

Whether you’re a seasoned composter or just getting started with food waste separation, this new service is designed to make it easy to do your bit.

Feilding is about to welcome something new to the kerbside collection - the green food scraps bin. Launching this November, the new service is more than just a bin. It’s a bold step toward reducing landfill, generating renewable energy, and giving Feilding households an easy, free way to make a difference.

Around 40% of what’s in the average rubbish bag is food scraps. Manawatū District Council’s new food scraps collection is here to change that. It’s a smart addition to Feilding’s kerbside system, offering residents a simple way to separate food waste from general rubbish.

As part of the rollout, households and businesses in Feilding will receive two new bins: a small kitchen caddy for collecting scraps indoors, and a larger green kerbside bin for weekly collection. This bin is designed to even take the tricky stuff your home compost might struggle with including meat, bones, dairy, rice, bread, coffee grounds, tea bags, nutshells, and more. It’s built for leftovers with no limits.

Until scraps are able to be processed in Feilding, all food scraps collected through the new service will be taken to Ecogas’s state-of-the-art bioenergy facility in Reporoa, where they’ll be turned into renewable energy. By keeping food waste out of rubbish bags, residents can save money by buying fewer blue bags while also helping to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The service is free to residents as it’s fully funded through New Zealand’s national Waste Levy - a government charge on landfill disposal that’s returned to councils to support waste minimisation projects like this one. Additional grant funding from the Ministry for the Environment has helped cover the cost of the bins and the rollout itself.

Local company Low Cost Bins has been awarded the contract to supply bins and manage the collections throughout Feilding. Bin delivery is underway this week, with collection starting the week of November 10th.  Included inside the bin is an information pack, and the household’s collection day will be marked on the side of the bin.

Whether you’re a seasoned composter or just getting started with food waste separation, this new service is designed to make it easy to do your bit. Every bin on the kerb is a win for the community, for the environment, and for Feilding’s role in shaping how New Zealand manages waste.

So, get ready to roll. The green bin is here and Feilding will soon be officially runway-ready.
