Kawakawa Nursery Sowing the Seed of Learning

MDC’s Kawakawa Nursery played host to a different kind of field trip last Wednesday, opening its gates to educators and community groups. Nursery staff turned trays of seedlings into teaching tools and eco-sourcing into a hands-on learning experience for teachers, equipping them with skills and knowledge to take back to their students. The event was delivered in partnership with Horizons Regional Council’s Enviroschools programme.

Paige Mey, MDC’s Native Plant Nursery Manager and Kristin Berge Stout, MDC’s Native Plant Nursery Assistant, shared their passion and expertise, encouraging kōrero and hands-on participation. Four stations showcased eco-sourcing, processing, treatment and sowing of seeds, through a variety of seed and flax samples. One station explored different types of cuttings featuring griselinia and hebes, followed by a session on a divisions using flax, discussing sexual versus asexual propagation techniques. A favourite was the ‘table of fail’, with examples of propagation trial and error proving that even the most experienced growers have their off days. “The table of fail got a few laughs” said Kristin Berge Stout. Edible seeds were on display, including the vibrant red Kākābeak seed, which prompted a variety of reactions from those brave enough to taste test them.

The event utilised Kawakawa Nursery’s recently published Propagation Guide Manawatū written by MDC’s Kristin Berge Stout. The guide shares seed collection, processing and sowing tips and tricks for common New Zealand grasses, trees and shrubs. The guide is free to download on MDC’s website: Kawakawa Nursery | Manawatū District Council

Supporting Enviroschool and educating teachers on propagation and eco-sourcing is simultaneously educating the next generation – futureproofing nature throughout Manawatū District, and beyond.

Kawakawa Nursery is hosting the next propagation event at Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) on 5 December 2025. The event will be launched on MCHL’s website within the upcoming weeks - watch this space!
