Manawatū District’s Youth Council are the voice of rangatahi in our district, bringing youth perspectives to the Council table. Last week, their efforts were celebrated as the Youth Council’s Chairperson, Kahupounamu Potama, presented their mid-year report to Council.
Manawatū District’s Youth Council actively engage with rangatahi in our district, providing opportunities for connection, development and leadership. Events are a key engagement avenue and Potama shared the last six months have seen Youth Council members attending many. This includes Outward Bound, an outdoor education and wilderness programme that challenged their comfort zones, and the Palmerston North Careers Expo in May, promoting participation and awareness within local government. The annual Youth Council organised ‘Next Gen’ youth market was held in July and was a hit, selling handmade crafts such as bracelets, pressed flowers and pictures. Many of the sales were donated to charity, and Potama highlighted that rangatahi gained hands-on entrepreneurial experience and received valuable community feedback. The Youth Council also facilitate the annual Young Achievers Awards, celebrating the efforts of rangatahi in the Manawatū District. Held in September, 137 were nominations received with over 600 in attendance.
Youth Council is a great opportunity for youth to develop their leadership, community, professional and political skills alongside developing their learning and confidence of Te Ao Māori. With members aged 13-24, their commitment to Council is in addition to their everyday busy schedules which often include school, employment, and volunteering – a true testament to their passion.
Through the guidance of Councillor Lara Blackmore and Youth Engagement Coordinator Joey McKechnie, MDC provides ongoing support, resources and opportunities that empower Youth Council members to succeed. Their mentorship and commitment to upholding kaupapa and values ensure that young people are equipped with the tools they need to make a meaningful impact in the District.
The positive influence is evident in the aspirations of members such as Potama who shared her plans to pursue a degree in Politics next year. Manawatū District Youth Council actively encourages youth engagement within Council and the community. It’s an important mission to support inclusive decision making and to develop our leaders of tomorrow.
