Our paw-some Dog Adoption programme.

Dogs are handed over to ACO's for a range of reasons. Life can change in the blink of an eye, and unforeseen circumstances can leave whānau having to surrender their furry friends to Council. Thankfully, due to this proactive programme, our ACO's have already seen a handful of these dogs successfully adopted into new loving families.

The programme connects dogs in our care with whānau prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership. Every dog deserves proper care, attention, shelter, food and exercise. But more than finding homes, the programme creates lifelong bonds and fulfilling friendships for both the dog and the owner.

It starts with one simple step: completing MDC’s Dog Adoption Interest form on Council’s website. Should an application suit an available dog, the ACO’s initiate a two-way conversation which includes an overview of the applicant's living circumstances and their experience living with and handling dogs – but also the dog's behavioural traits and personality.

If it’s a promising match, a meet and greet is organised to see whether personalities match. Our ACO’s will complete a property inspection before beginning a day trial period where the dog joins their prospective whānau in their home. Should the trial prove successful, the adoption process comes full circle and is finalised upon the processing of the adoption fee.

This programme is all about giving these dogs a second chance. It's community supporting community to help these dogs find their forever home. It brings a smile to owner’s faces – and a wag to dog’s tails!
