Double recognition for MDC at national local government awards

Manawatū District Council is celebrating a double success on the national stage, with two of its Elected Members recognised for their outstanding leadership and contributions to their communities at Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) events.

Councillor Alison Short received the 2026 SuperHuman Award, while Councillor Bridget Bell was named Young Elected Member of the Year at the LGNZ Young Elected Members hui on Tuesday 13 October, ahead of the SuperLocal conference.

The two awards recognise different aspects of community leadership, but both highlight the dedication and commitment of those working to make a difference in the Manawatū District.

For Councillor Alison Short, the SuperHuman Award acknowledges almost two decades of service to the district and her ability to bring people and organisations together to achieve meaningful outcomes.

First elected in 2007, Cr Short has played an important role in improving access to healthcare, supporting communities through emergencies and championing opportunities for young people.

Her collaborative approach has also helped bring residents, iwi, researchers and councils together to strengthen climate resilience planning in Tangimoana.

The SuperHuman Award celebrates individuals who go above and beyond their formal responsibilities to make a lasting difference in their communities.

Meanwhile, Councillor Bridget Bell's Young Elected Member of the Year award recognises her leadership, positive community impact and commitment to strengthening representation in local government.

Now serving her second term as the district's Ngā Tapuae o Matangi Māori Ward Councillor, Cr Bell has become a strong advocate for her community and for the next generation of local government leaders.

Described in her nomination as "a shining light" and "a pocket rocket of intelligence", Cr Bell was recognised for her proactive approach, enthusiasm and ability to turn ideas into action.

The national award also acknowledges her contribution to supporting and encouraging young elected members across Aotearoa.
