Freedom Camping in the Manawatū District

Before hitting the road to freedom camp under the stars, it’s important to be prepared. From river and water safety, to civil defence information, MDC’s new webpage ensures campers can be aware of their surroundings and make the most of their stay.

There are 12 freedom camping sites throughout the Manawatū District, stretching North to South, from Himatangi Beach to Āpiti. On MDC’s newly updated ‘Freedom Camping’ webpage, an interactive map has been developed giving a visual representation of freedom camping locations and amenities throughout the District.

A new video has also been released, showcasing some of the District’s freedom camping hotspots and explains where to find key information. Even if camping is not your thing, the stunning footage of the District is worth a watch!

Most freedom camping sites throughout the District have different guidelines, whether it be a site specifically for self-contained vehicles only or for caravans, tent freedom camping and non-self-contained vehicles. Specific information pertaining to each site is now readily available on MDC’s website.

Risks are site specific as well so check it out while you are on the go. It’s always a good idea to check internet and mobile signal connectivity and to have a radio in your freedom camping toolbox. Download the Antenno app and follow Manawatū District Council and Civil Defence Manawatū Whanganui on Facebook for updates in the event of an emergency.

Whether you’re planning an overnight stop or exploring the area more widely, make the most of the cooler weather and quieter months. On behalf of Manawatū District Council, we hope you freedom camp respectfully and enjoy the District for all it has to offer.
