Moving together for wellbeing, connection and community
MDC employees are stepping up for staff wellbeing, community connection and great causes through its participation in monthly fitness and wellbeing challenges.
Employees are invited to take part in monthly challenges with the shared aim of supporting good mental health and wellbeing, strengthening team culture, and giving back to the community through fundraising.
This month, participating MDC staff are proudly participating in Move Your Butt, a nationwide fundraiser supporting Bowel Cancer New Zealand. The challenge encourages people to walk, run, swim or ride 100km in the month of February for the 100 Kiwis who die from bowel cancer every month while raising awareness and funds for bowel cancer.
MDC’s involvement includes both individual and team-led fundraising efforts such as office based ice cream sales. These moments have created opportunities for staff from across different teams to connect, support one another, and build strong cross-team relationships.
While fundraising is an important outcome of the monthly challenges, MDC says the biggest benefit has been the sense of connection and shared purpose created among staff.
“What’s been great is the way these challenges bring people together,” says Frances Smorti, GM People and Corporate. “It’s not about being the fittest or fastest – it’s about encouraging each other, having a bit of fun, and doing something worthwhile as a team.”

Smorti encourages other businesses and organisations to consider taking part in monthly challenges of their own for a causes that resonate with their people and their communities.
“Whether it’s a physical challenge, a wellbeing goal, or a cause close to your heart, these shared experiences can have a powerful impact both inside the workplace and beyond it,” Smorti says.
