Mt Lees Homestead working group progresses discussions on future opportunities
Following a public open day and considerable community interest, Manawatū District Council has established a working group, including members of the Ormond Wilson family, to explore possible uses and opportunities for Mt Lees Homestead's future.
The group has met, expressing an interest in leading fundraising efforts and developing a financially sustainable operating model for Council to consider.
Lyn Daly, GM Community, says the group's willingness to take an active role in exploring practical solutions is an encouraging step forward.
"It's clear that Mt Lees Homestead holds significance for many people in our community, and we appreciate the interest shown in its future.
"Maintaining a building of this age comes with significant ongoing costs, and Council is mindful of the financial implications for ratepayers. Any future proposal will need to demonstrate how the homestead could be operated and maintained sustainably."
Council confirms that demolition of Mt Lees Homestead is not being considered. Previous discussions have explored a range of options, including the possibility of relocation.
No programme of work for the homestead is proposed for inclusion or consultation in the upcoming Long-term Plan as a result of the working group’s interest in exploring options. This does not prevent Council from considering a future proposal developed by the working group.
The working group will now continue exploring fundraising opportunities and a financially viable operating model. Council looks forward to considering any proposal the group may develop before making decisions about the homestead's future.
