Planting the Future at Kaikokopu Reserve

Investment from the Hīmatangi Beach community and Manawatū District Council is continuing to breathe new life into Kaikokopu Reserve, with more than 1,300 shrubs planted during the latest community planting day.

The community planting day returned for a second year on Friday 18 September 2026, seeing around three times as many shrubs planted compared to August 2025. Funding secured through Manawatū District Council’s Long-term Plan has supported the ongoing revitalisation of Hīmatangi Beach's Kaikokopu Reserve, transforming the area into an increasingly popular community space.

After a grey start to the morning, the clouds cleared over Hīmatangi Beach as around 30 volunteers arrived ready to roll up their sleeves and get planting. Members of the Hīmatangi Beach Community Committee were joined by local residents, Council officers, Green by Nature staff, and staff from Ricoh, Property Brokers and Massey University on a volunteer day, all eager to get their hands dirty and contribute to the reserve’s future.

Once an underutilised area, Kaikokopu Reserve is now becoming a valued destination for locals following planting and revitalisation efforts. When windy or unsettled weather makes a trip to the beach less appealing, Kaikokopu Reserve provides an alternative place to explore, have a picnic or simply enjoy a sheltered walk along the Kaikokopu Stream.

Hīmatangi Beach Community Committee's Chairperson, Judy Howatson, said it was a privilege to be part of the reserve’s transformation. Hīmatangi Beach's Liaison Councillor, Jerry Pickford, reiterated the sentiment, sharing pride in supporting the community as it continues to build on their progress made at the reserve.

After a productive morning, volunteers were rewarded with a sausage sizzle and the satisfaction of seeing more than 1,300 new shrubs planted and freshly mulched. With the continued passion and care of the Hīmatangi Beach community, Kaikokopu Reserve is well placed to keep growing as a valued space for locals to enjoy, now and into the future.
