Providing Play in Times of Emergency

Thanks to Sport Manawatū's 'Quick Release Play' Fund, Manawatū District Council (MDC) has purchased a range of toys, games and activities to support tamariki and their whānau when they arrive at Civil Defence Centres across the Manawatū District during emergencies.

The new collection fills four 100 litre containers, ready to be transported to Civil Defence Centres across the District when needed. From soft toys for babies to more advanced board games for teenagers, the play kits cater to a wide range of ages and interests, providing opportunities for entertainment, distraction and a sense of normality during uncertain times.

During an emergency, families often leave their homes at short notice, sometimes with only the clothes on their backs. Having familiar activities and opportunities for play available at Civil Defence Centres offers reassurance, comfort and a welcome distraction during what can be an overwhelming experience.

"These are more than just toys," says MDC's Emergency Management Officer, Hannah Tokona. "They provide our tamariki something to focus on and help create a sense of normality when everything around them feels uncertain."

To celebrate Play Week (19-25 October 2026), Council's Emergency Management team unboxed the new resources with the community at Rongotea's Te Kawau Recreation Centre, one of the district’s Civil Defence Centres, on Wednesday 21 October. Tamariki alongside their whānau came along after school to put the new gear to the test, making the most of the sunshine with a mix of indoor and outdoor activities.

The afternoon was not only an opportunity to put the new resources to good use, but also a reminder of the importance of supporting the wellbeing of our communities, particularly our youngest residents, during emergencies.
