Rural Rubbish & Recycling

Rubbish and recycling services in rural Manawatū vary depending on where you live. Some properties receive a weekly roadside rubbish collection, while others need to take their official MDC blue rubbish bags to a designated rural rubbish drop-off point.

Rural and village recycling is available through Mobile Recycling Centres located around the District.

Rural rubbish collection

If you live on a rubbish collection route

Council collects official MDC blue rubbish bags weekly from designated rural and village collection routes.

All rubbish must be in an official MDC blue rubbish bag.

Put your bag out:

  • before 7:30am on your collection day
  • in the correct collection location
  • on the same side of the road as the direction the collection truck is travelling.

Bags placed on the opposite side of the road will not be collected.

If it is not safe for the rubbish truck to stop outside your property, please place your rubbish at a rural drop off point.

If you don't have roadside rubbish collection

If your property is outside a Council rubbish collection route, you can take your official MDC blue rubbish bags to a designated rural rubbish drop-off point.

Use the map to find your nearest drop-off point and its collection day.

Rural and village recycling

Rural residents can use Council's network of Mobile Recycling Centres located in villages throughout the Manawatū District.

Mobile Recycle Centres are open 24/7, so you can take accepted recycling to these facilities when it suits you.

Mobile Recycling Centres are currently available at:

  • Āpiti - Watsons Road - Google Map
  • Halcombe - 46 Willoughby Street - Google Map (this recycling centre does not accept glass)
  • Himatangi Beach - 8 Koputara Road - Google Map
  • Kimbolton - 7 London Street - Google Map
  • Pohangina - 976 Finnis Road - Google Map
  • Rongotea - 3 Wear Street - Google Map
  • Sanson - 42 Dundas Road - Google Map (accessed from the service lane off Burt Street behind the Z Service Station)
  • Tangimoana - 42 Tangimoana Beach Road - Google Map

You can recycle:

  • plastic bottles and containers numbered 1, 2 and 5
  • paper and cardboard
  • aluminium and steel cans and tins
  • glass bottles and jars, except at the Halcombe facility.

Before dropping off your recycling:

  • empty and rinse bottles, containers, tins and cans
  • remove lids and tops
  • make sure paper and cardboard is clean and free from food contamination
  • flatten cardboard

Do not leave:

  • plastic bags or soft plastics
  • household rubbish
  • polystyrene
  • window glass
  • mirrors
  • Pyrex or other heat-resistant glass
  • other materials not specifically accepted at the facility.

Mobile Recycling Centres are for recycling only. Do not leave general rubbish, furniture or other unwanted items beside the recycling containers.

Leaving rubbish or unaccepted items at a recycling centre is illegal dumping.

Rural bulk rubbish collections

Council also runs scheduled bulk rubbish collection events in several rural communities.

These collections give rural residents an opportunity to dispose of larger quantities of general household rubbish that may not be practical to dispose of through the normal blue-bag service.

Current bulk rubbish collections are held in or near:

  • Himatangi Beach
  • Pohangina
  • Rangiwahia
  • Tangimoana
  • Waituna West

What do I need to know?

  • All bulk collections start at 9am.
  • Charges are based on the estimated volume of rubbish, with some items charged according to Council's current fees and charges.
  • Payment is EFTPOS only. No cash.
  • Hazardous waste is not accepted.
  • Oversized or very heavy individual items cannot be collected. This includes large whiteware and some large furniture.

“Bulk” refers to the amount of rubbish you can bring, not the collection of very large or heavy individual items.

Collection arrangements vary by location. Some communities have kerbside collection while others use a designated collection point.

Check the current calendar before putting rubbish out.
