Recycling Collection

Feilding properties receive a fortnightly kerbside recycling collection using a yellow-lid wheelie bin and a black recycling crate. Your yellow-lid bin is for recyclable plastic containers, paper, cardboard, tins and cans. Your black crate is for glass bottles and jars.

Use our find your collection day search to check your recycling day and whether your property is collected in Week 1 or Week 2.

Put your recycling out before 7:30am on your collection day.

What you need to know

  • Recycling is collected every two weeks in Feilding.
  • Use your yellow-lid wheelie bin for plastics 1, 2 and 5, paper, cardboard, tins and cans.
  • Use your black recycling crate for glass bottles and jars.
  • Keep glass out of your yellow-lid recycling bin.
  • Rinse containers, tins, cans, bottles and jars before recycling them.
  • Remove lids and tops from bottles, jars and containers.
  • Do not put recycling into plastic bags.
  • Put your recycling out before 7:30am.
  • Leave at least half a metre between your bins and other objects.

Your recycling bin also has a sticker showing your collection day and recycling week.

For example:

  • TUE1 means your recycling is collected every second Tuesday during Week 1 of the fortnightly schedule.
  • TUE2 means your recycling is collected every second Tuesday during Week 2.

Yellow-lid recycling bin

Your yellow-lid wheelie bin is for clean household recycling.

You can put the following in your yellow-lid recycling bin:

  • Plastic bottles and containers numbered 1, 2 and 5
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Tins and cans

Before putting items in your recycling bin:

  • empty them
  • rinse them clean
  • remove lids and tops.

Paper and cardboard must be clean and free from food contamination. If recycling is not clean and is tipped into the collection truck, it can contaminate the entire load, which may then be sent to landfill.

Flatten cardboard boxes where practical to save space. Pizza boxes can be recycled if they are free from food scraps.

Please keep recyclable items loose in your yellow-lid bin. Do not put them inside a plastic shopping bag before placing them in the bin.

The items that can be put in your kerbside recycling bin is the same all across New Zealand. Soft plastics are hard to recycle items, and for this reason are not included in kerbside recycling. Plastic bags and other soft plastics can also become caught in recycling sorting machinery.

However, there are other ways to recycle your soft plastics in the Manawatu!

In Feilding we currently have 2 soft plastics recycling bins located at:

  • Woolworths Feilding
  • The Warehouse Feilding

For information on what can and can’t go in the soft plastics recycling bins please see this link: Soft plastic recycling guide (PDF file, 970.5 KB)

Black recycling crate

Your black recycling crate is for household glass recycling.

Use your black recycling crate for household glass bottles and jars, including:

  • beer bottles
  • wine bottles
  • other glass drink bottles
  • food jars
  • jam jars.

Before putting glass in your crate:

  • empty and rinse bottles and jars
  • remove lids and tops
  • place bottles and jars upright
  • keep everything below the rim of the crate.

Do not overfill your crate.

Do not put these items in your black recycling crate:

  • broken bottles or jars
  • window glass
  • mirrors
  • drinking glasses
  • Pyrex or other heat-resistant glass
  • ceramics or crockery
  • light bulbs
  • rubbish
  • plastic, tins, cans, paper or cardboard.

Only household glass bottles and jars can go in the black recycling crate.

Broken glass should not be placed in your recycling crate.

How to put your recycling out

Put your yellow-lid recycling bin and black crate outside your property before 7:30am on your collection day.

Place them:

  • close to, but not on, the kerb
  • on a flat, level surface where possible
  • somewhere the collection truck can reach from the road
  • clear of cars, trees, fences, signs and other obstacles.

Position your yellow-lid bin correctly

  • Face the wheels towards your house.
  • Make sure the lid can fully close.
  • Do not overfill the bin.
  • Leave at least half a metre between the bin and other objects.

The collection truck needs enough space to safely lift and empty your wheelie bin.

Position your black crate safely

Place glass bottles and jars:

  • upright
  • securely inside the crate
  • below the top edge of the crate.

Do not overfill it.

If your recycling and food scraps are being collected on the same day, place your items in this order:

Food scraps bin → Black glass crate → Blue rubbish bag → Yellow-lid recycling bin

Leave at least 0.5 metres between bins.

What happens if I put the wrong thing in my recycling?

Items that do not belong in your recycling can contaminate other recyclable material and cause problems during sorting.

Your recycling may not be collected if it contains unacceptable items or is unsafe for the collection crew.

If you are unsure, use our recycling guide or contact Council before putting the item in your bin.

Have more recycling than will fit in your bin?

Do not overfill your yellow-lid bin or place extra recycling beside it.

Additional recycling can be taken to an approved Council recycling facility such as the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre in Feilding.

You can also purchase an additional recycling bin from Council. Current Council fees apply.

My recycling was not collected

If your recycling was out correctly before 7:30am but was not collected, view our problems with a collection page.

Lost, damaged or additional recycling bins and crates

Each recycling bin and crate has a serial number and property address to help return misplaced containers to the correct property.

If your recycling bin or crate has gone missing, check nearby properties first in case it has been moved after collection.

If you need a replacement or an additional bin or crate, contact Council. Charges may apply.

Public holiday collections

Most rubbish and recycling collections continue as normal on public holidays.

Collection arrangements may change for Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Check current collection notices and the recycling calendar when these holidays are approaching.

Recycling outside Feilding

Kerbside recycling collection is currently provided to eligible Feilding properties.

If you live elsewhere in the Manawatū District, community recycling facilities are available in several villages where accepted recyclable materials can be dropped off.
