Rubbish Collection

Manawatū District Council provides weekly rubbish collection in Feilding and along selected village and rural collection routes. Depending on where you live, your official MDC blue rubbish bags will either be collected from outside your property or from a designated rural collection point.

Use our find your collection day search to enter your address and check whether you receive kerbside collection, your collection day, and the services available at your property.

Put your rubbish out in the correct location before 7:30am on your collection day.

What you need to know

  • Rubbish is collected weekly.
  • Rubbish for the Council collection must be placed in an official Manawatū District Council blue rubbish bag.
  • Put your bag out before 7:30am on your collection day.
  • Some rural properties use a designated rural rubbish collection point rather than having rubbish collected outside their property.
  • If you live on a rural collection route, make sure your bag is placed on the correct side of the road for the direction the collection truck travels.

Official MDC blue rubbish bags

Council rubbish collections use official Manawatū District Council blue rubbish bags.

The cost of the bag contributes towards the collection and disposal of your rubbish.

For 2026/27, official rubbish bags purchased directly from Manawatū District Council cost: $3.40 per bag or bundles of 5 for $17 (incl GST).

Retail prices at supermarkets and other stores may vary.

Official MDC blue bags are available from:

  • Manawatū District Council Administration Office, 135 Manchester Street, Feilding
  • Manawatū Community Hub Libraries, 64 Stafford Street, Feilding
  • Makino Aquatic Centre, 10 Council Place, Feilding
  • Supermarkets in Feilding and Palmerston North
  • Other selected convenience stores throughout the Manawatū District.

Blue bags are for general household rubbish that cannot be reused, recycled or collected through another Council waste service.

Examples include:

  • nappies, tissues and sanitary products
  • Damaged or soiled items
  • non-recyclable household packaging
  • plastics that cannot be recycled
  • small quantities of ordinary household rubbish

Please note blue bags have a weight limit of 10kg.

Keeping recycling and food waste out of blue bags reduces the amount of rubbish sent to landfill. Do not overfill a bag or place rubbish beside it and expect it to be collected. Large quantities and bulky items should be taken to the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre or disposed of through another appropriate waste service.

Please use an official MDC blue rubbish bag and make sure it can be safely closed and handled.

Do not put the following in your blue bag:

  • hazardous waste or chemicals
  • paint
  • used oil
  • lead-acid batteries
  • medical waste
  • radioactive waste
  • liquids or other free-flowing waste
  • items that could injure collection staff unless they have been safely contained
  • items likely to puncture or tear the bag unless they have been safely contained
  • large or bulky items that do not fit safely in the bag.

Some of these items can be taken to the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre or another specialist collection service.

Take extra care with anything sharp.

Broken glass or other sharp items must be securely wrapped or contained so they cannot puncture the bag or injure the person collecting it.

Do not put a badly torn or punctured bag out for collection. Transfer the rubbish into a new bag or securely repair the bag before collection.

How to put your rubbish out

If your rubbish is collected outside your property

Put your official blue bag:

  • out before 7:30am
  • outside the property the rubbish came from
  • as close to the kerb as practical
  • clear of the footpath
  • somewhere that does not block pedestrians, vehicles or access to the property
  • away from parked cars, trees, signs and other obstacles where possible.

If your rubbish, recycling and food scraps are being collected at the same time, leave 50cm between each item so collection vehicles can safely reach them.

If you use a rural collection point

Place your official blue bag at the designated collection point:

  • no earlier than 12 noon on the day before collection
  • before 7:30am on collection day
  • in the location shown for your collection route.

Do not leave rubbish at a rural collection point outside the permitted times. This may be treated as illegal dumping and could result in an infringement.

For roadside rural collections, bags must be placed on the side of the road shown on the collection route map, as collection trucks collect from one side of the vehicle.

Public holiday collections

Most rubbish collections continue on their usual collection day when it is a public holiday.

Different arrangements may apply for Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Check our current collection notices when these holidays are approaching.

Your rubbish was not collected?

If your rubbish was out correctly before 7:30am but was not collected, view our problems with a collection page.

Businesses and Schools

The blue bag collection route goes through the CBD, so this service is available to businesses if needed.

Businesses producing larger quantities of waste can also use licensed commercial waste collectors or the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre.

Too much rubbish for your blue bags?

For larger amounts of rubbish, bulky items, green waste and some specialist waste, use the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre.

Some rural communities also have scheduled bulk rubbish collections during the year.
