Community Voices Lead to a Pedestrian Crossing Near Makino Aquatic Centre

A new pedestrian crossing has been installed on Grey Street to significantly enhance safety for those walking to the Makino Aquatic Centre (MAC), particularly school groups and young swimmers.

This improvement was prompted by community feedback gathered during the 2024–2034 Long-Term Plan consultation, which highlighted concerns about pedestrian safety and the speed of traffic along Grey Street.

The nearby school regularly visits the Makino Aquatic Centre as part of its learning programme, with students walking in groups to and from the facility. Crossing a busy road with a large group of children can be challenging, but the new crossing—with high-visibility striping and clear pedestrian signage—provides a much safer and more accessible route.

Each year, the pool welcomes hundreds of school-aged children who take part in swimming lessons, physical education, and other recreational activities. The new crosswalk is expected to reduce traffic-related risks and provide peace of mind for teachers, parents, and caregivers.

Council extends its thanks to the community members whose submissions helped make this new pedestrian crossing possible.
