Bin Basics: What you need to know
We’re excited to bring this new service to Feilding - and the best part is, it comes at no extra cost to the ratepayer. The biggest change will be getting used to separating your food scraps and making sure they are free of contamination (plastic, wrappers etc), but before long, it’ll feel just as routine as putting out your rubbish each week.
Your bin will be delivered along with a magnet and pamphlet to help remind you of what can and can’t go in the bin, but until then we’ve answered some frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process.
No bin liners please, but you can use a small amount of paper to line your bin if you wish.
Pop your food scraps into your freezer until collection day! You can also dust the bottom of your kitchen caddy and/or bin with baking soda after rinsing to help minimise odours.
Yes, please contact Manawatū District Council by phone on (06) 323 0000 to purchase an extra bin.
Unfortunately larger bins aren’t available for this service for residential properties. Commercial food businesses can purchase a bigger bin.
Both your kitchen caddy and kerbside bins can easily be washed with soap and water. You might want to water blast or use your hose for the kerbside bin and for some residents your kitchen caddy may fit in your dishwasher.
The bin has a special handle lock mechanism that clicks into place when in an upright position to stop the lid from opening. This should stop animals from getting into the bins.
No, this is a food scraps service only. You can use your lawn clippings and greenwaste for compost, or take it to the Manawatū Resource Recovery Centre in Feilding where it is also sent for composting.
No, compostable items and packaging cannot be put in your food scraps bin. Processing of food scraps will be through anaerobic digestion, so compostable packaging won’t be accepted.
The food scraps collection is a weekly service and falls on the same day as your normal Council blue bag collection. If you are unsure of your collection day you can look it up here: Find Your Collection Day | Manawatū District Council
